If you are like me and my practice, it is becoming increasing difficult to find information on potential Defendants. Whether by intent or a result of modern technology, these companies operate in a cloud. Bankruptcy has its own requirements for listing a debt and that creditor receiving notice. It is usually accomplished under a trade name. (For example, you might list a debt under the name of Exxon, because that is the trade name of the gas card used, the billing comes under this name, but for purpose of drafting or serving an adversary proceeding, Exxon is just an affinity card issued by a large bank and is not the proper party). What you find with many Internet based companies in particular, such a payday loan companies that just operate online and debt buyers, is that this information is not sufficient for purpose of suing the correct party or serving the adversary proceeding you have filed. You do not want to waste time and money suing an inaccurate party. You do not want to waste time and money not achieving the best service possible. But, how do you start to understand who the actual perpetrator is for purposes of an adversary or service?
One of the tools that I use at the investigative stage is IP Tools. On one page this website offers you a variety of online tools for those who need to check up on domains. These tools include DNS Lookup, Domain Info, Ping, IP County, Spam Database Lookup, Whois Lookup, Reverse DNS Lookup, and Resolve Host and Traceroute among others.
If you are in need of finding out more about some company operating online, it would not hurt to start here.
